St. Augustine Alligator Farm to Host Winter CrocFest
CrocFest is an event where people can come together with the mutual interest of crocodilian conservation. At each CrocFest, funds are raised for conservation efforts for a chosen species of crocodile. All profits from the admission to the events go directly to the selected fundraiser. This year, the annual Winter CrocFest will be hosted by the St. Augustine Alligator Farm.
CrocFest started out as just a social event for crocodilian enthusiasts to come together and have a good time, sharing stories and information. Over time, it has turned into a major fundraising event for crocodilian species that now raises tens of thousands of dollars each year. On December 9, 2017 St. Augustine Alligator Farm will be hosting CrocFest for the very first time. The fundraiser will go towards conservation efforts for the Cuban crocodile, a critically endangered species. The conservation effort includes preventing hybridization between the Cuban crocodile with other species and reintroducing suitable captive Cuban crocodiles into Zapata Swamp, one of the few places where the Cuban crocodile can still be found.
This year’s Winter CrocFest is a highly anticipated event. There has been a lot of buzz surrounding this event and it is the goal to beat last year’s Cuban crocodile fundraising of $40,000. The host, St. Augustine Alligator Farm, will be open until 9pm on the day of the event. They will be having special night time feedings of several crocodilians including the feeding of locally famous and beloved Maximo, a thrilling show. Visitors and crocodilian enthusiasts alike can take part in the event and come together for the common cause of raising money for the Cuban crocodile conservation efforts.
